A number of changes to the LGPS came into effect on 1 June 2018.
The changes include:
- Allowing employee members of the LGPS to retire from 55 without needing to have permission from their employer
- Allowing deferred members who were in pensionable employment after 31 May 2018 to access their deferred benefits from 55
However, if a member accesses their benefits:
- before 60 or
- after 60, but before normal pension age or being protected by the rule of 85
their benefits are reduced for being paid for longer.
